![]() Having carried passengers up to the Franklin Mountains outside of El Paso for the last 60 years, the tramway has been recognized for decades as a must-see and do when visiting southwest Texas. Drive north for 14 blocks, then turn left onto McKinley Ave. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department announced on Tuesday, September 18 that the Wyler Aerial Tramway is closed indefinitely to the public. After a mile turn left onto Altura Ave., then in three blocks turn right onto Alabama St. It appears that it may return to its original purpose and only service crews will be able to see the spectacular views from Ranger Peak. After many years of service, the team began to falter and reports of people being struck in it requiring rescue began to appear on the nightly news. Wyler and KTSM TV in 1961, the Wyler Aerial Tramway operated continuously until 2018, but for many years, was not open to the public. Sometime later, it was reopened and advertised as new and improved and boasted the ability to view Texas, Mexico and New Mexico at the same time.
